Britni’s brother had a serious accident that left him with a serious brain injury. For her Civic Engagement project, Britni decided to try to “better the lives of individuals that live with a disability.” She attended Advocacy Training classes at the Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance. These classes educated her on on politics and a few bills that the Alliance is working hard on getting passed this year at the capital. The bill that Britni focused on is called the 5% campaign, and if passed would give community based and group homes that provide direct care to those with disabilities a 5% raise in their budgets.

Britni writes, “My project is rooted in the area of justice…I am ultimately trying to help solve one of the problems that people deal with while living with a disability.  I am trying to help better the quality of life that they have by advocating and hoping that this bill is passed that will allocate more money in the budget for those receiving care… This is an ongoing project that is not yet nor will it ever be completely finished.  I have learned much more than what I knew before about politics and this class served as a support group as well giving me hope for my brother to recover more.”
