Our project was to start a student volunteer program with Campus Public Safety. This would provide students with the opportunity to better understand and assist in conflict deescalation in real world situations. It would also promote the new Criminal Justice major as well as promote Criminal Justice or Law based careers. We:

  • Interviewed a representative of Campus Public Safety (Jerry Rice).
  • Interviewed Sarah Phillips, Director of the School of Social Science.
  • Researched universities, both private and public, with student security programs or with security that is comparable to Pacific’s.
  • Contacted other Universities regarding their student volunteer team regulations.
  • Researched the laws relevant to our project.
  • Researched the process and costs of private security licensing in the state of Oregon.
  • Met with CPS regarding the possibility of in-house training for next year, costs, and volunteer criteria.
  • Investigated campus for safety violations.
  • Brought awareness to preventable crime on campus (theft being the most reported crime) through educational posters.
  • Created by-laws and manual for future students wanting to volunteer.
