This student, named Jalwa, had decided to clean up her Muslim place of worship to make sure that others have a good experience while practicing their faith. On a recent trip to her family mosque, Jalwa had noticed that it was in dire need of organizing, wiping down and most importantly, a good ol’ fashioned picking up of things. She had over six other people join her in this clean up and gave assignments to each individual that was participating. One brought cleaning supplies, another created a google sign-in form, somebody provided lunch for the crew, and others came up with ideas based on observations of what needed to be done in the mosque. Jalwa states, “I care for my fellow community members and my family and this was my way of showing it to them and giving back to the community that welcomed us.” She related this to Ethics by applying her project to utilitarianism. Utilitarianism is doing things that result in the greatest good for the greatest number and she applied her project to utilitarianism by providing a place of worship that others can go to for a very long time after the project was over.
