Quijuie worked on a project close to home, for 12 years he had lived in one of the most flooded parts of Liberia and had experienced the rainy season’s damaging effects. He used the skills learned in his Critical Thinking class to research a creative solution that would prevent his community members’ homes from flooding during Liberia’s rainy season. After brainstorming with members of his community in Liberia and the United States, he found building a drainage system in his hometown would be the best way to protect his neighbors’ homes from flooding. To begin his project, Quijuie hosted a fundraiser and organized a team from the United States to work with his community in Liberia. Although they had a limited budget, his project team succeeded in building a reliable drainage system that protected 85% of his community members’ homes from flooding.
