Tom has a friend whose daughter suffers from SMA, spinal muscular atrophy. To better accommodate their daughter, Tom’s friend needs to remodel his house and is in need of funds to do so. When Tom was presented with his Civic Engagement Project assignment, he knew this was a great opportunity to help and put his carpentry skills to use. Tom and his own family spent about 30-35 hours building birdhouses and other lawn decorations. Then, they had a sale and raised awareness about SMA. Tom writes, “By showing that I could take time to do this project, other people may realize that it doesn’t take much effort to do some good if you have help. So I believe that doing charity in this project has made a difference in the lives of my friends and family. Just being together to build projects had a positive effect between us. I believe that my project also shows justice. By raising awareness of SMA in the process of raising money, we have informed some of the public about SMA and its struggles with no treatment and no cure.”
